What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid, commercially known as AdBlue® in India, is a non-toxic, colourless solution injected into the exhaust system of BS6-compliant diesel trucks to neutralise harmful nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) before they leave the tailpipe. It is not a fuel additive. It runs in a completely separate tank and is consumed independently of diesel.

Every commercial vehicle registered in India after April 2020 under Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms is equipped with an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. Every SCR system requires a continuous supply of DEF to operate legally and efficiently.

DEF (also called AdBlue in India) is a solution of 32.5% automotive urea and 67.5% deionised water. BS6 trucks need it because their SCR system uses DEF to chemically convert toxic NOₓ gases into harmless nitrogen and water. Without DEF, the SCR system cannot meet BS6 emission standards and the vehicle enters a restricted operating mode.
DEF consumption is typically 2–6% of diesel consumption. For heavy trucks (25T+) covering ~120,000 km/year, this equates to roughly 1.0–1.8 litres per 100 km, or around 1,200–2,100 litres annually. Light delivery vans consume far less — approximately 0.3–0.5 litres per 100 km.

Always use dedicated, clean containers; never store DEF in containers previously used for diesel, oil, or plain water.
AdBlue in India is typically priced between ₹45–80 per litre depending on supplier, region, and volume. Always purchase from ISO 22241-certified suppliers or authorised commercial vehicle dealers to ensure the correct 32.5% urea concentration. Cheap, uncertified DEF can cause SCR catalyst damage worth ₹1–2 lakh.
