The Basics
What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?
Diesel Exhaust Fluid, commercially known as AdBlue® in India, is a non-toxic, colourless solution injected into the exhaust system of BS6-compliant diesel trucks to neutralise harmful nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) before they leave the tailpipe. It is not a fuel additive. It runs in a completely separate tank and is consumed independently of diesel.
Every commercial vehicle registered in India after April 2020 under Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms is equipped with an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. Every SCR system requires a continuous supply of DEF to operate legally and efficiently.

Freezes at −11°CTanks self-thaw. No driver action needed.
Degrades above 30°CStore in shade. Critical in Indian summers.

Contamination is disasterEven trace diesel destroys the SCR catalyst.
Consumption Reference
DEF Consumption Per km: Fleet Benchmarks
DEF consumption scales directly with diesel burn — roughly 2 to 6 litres of DEF per 100 litres of diesel. Heavier payloads, older SCR injectors, and stop-start urban routes push consumption higher. Use this as your planning benchmark:
A low DEF warning is not optional. When Diesel Exhaust Fluid runs out, BS6 trucks enter limp mode — speed capped at 20 km/h — and some will not restart without a refill. A stranded truck on a national highway costs ₹10,000–50,000+ before recovery even begins.
India Context
BS6 Made DEF Mandatory: There Is No Opting Out
Every diesel truck registered after April 2020 requires DEF
India's Bharat Stage 6 norms mandate SCR technology across all new commercial vehicles. If your fleet includes trucks purchased in the last five years, DEF management is a legal compliance requirement built into the hardware itself. A non-functioning SCR system is a direct emissions violation under the Motor Vehicles Act.

5 Signs Your Fleet Has a DEF Management Problem
These symptoms point to DEF mismanagement before a breakdown forces the issue. Every one of them is preventable with basic monitoring.
Best Practices
4 Ways to Manage DEF Smarter Across Your Fleet
Treat Diesel Exhaust Fluid like fuel. Procure it right, store it correctly, and track it vehicle by vehicle.
Track DEF Consumption Per Vehicle
Build a DEF-to-diesel ratio baseline per vehicle class. Any truck running above that baseline consistently needs a workshop visit, not just a refill.
Source ISO 22241-Certified AdBlue Only
Buy from authorised suppliers with batch certification. Saving ₹2–5 per litre on cheap DEF is nothing against a destroyed SCR catalyst and weeks of downtime.
Storage: Shade, Sealed, and Dated
Keep DEF cool and covered. Rotate stock by expiry date. Never reuse containers that held diesel, oil, or even plain water — residue causes contamination.
Monitor DEF Levels in Real Time
Fleet telematics platforms alert managers when DEF runs low, before drivers notice the warning light. No surprises, no stranded vehicles, no limp mode on a highway.
